Meanwhile, despite the COVID-19
pandemic, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) said on Sunday, June 7,
that it is set to commence its activities in Nigeria. The organisation said it
would commence examination after the Nigerian government reopens schools across
the country. WAEC had suspended its examinations in March 2020 following the
closure of schools in the country as the government announced lockdown of some
states and Abuja.
The Nigerian Tribune quotes WAEC's
spokesperson, Demianus Ojijeogu, as stating this during an interview.
He explained that the organisation
was fully set to commence its operations and conduct examinations for
candidates but that it is not in a hurry. He said after schools resume, the
organisation would have guidelines for conducting the examinations. He expects
that WAEC would not rush its candidates into the examination even though it had
provided them online study materials. Still on education, the COVID-19 pandemic
in Nigeria is making the various schools and tertiary institutions like the
National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) adopt new strategies. The management
of the institution has said it would adopt a virtual matriculation for the new
intakes which it has slated for June 13.

The institution said the adopted
strategy is in line with the rules against coronavirus. The News Agency of
Nigeria (NAN) reports that this development was made known by Ibrahim Sheme,
the university's director of media and publicity.
The statement said the tertiary
institution adopted the virtual matriculation in obedience to the rule in the
battle against COVID-19. The report also quoted the spokesperson as saying that
Abdalla Adamu, the vice-chancellor, of the university, would deliver an
address. The students would, thereafter, administer oaths on the matriculating
students and this would be carried out by Felix Idoka, the registrar. The event
is going to be live using zoom and the students are not expected to be
physically present.
